Memorial Day Weekend

"The Twins" are all set for Memorial Day weekend, so join them for some fun! Buy a poppy, salute a Veteran, visit Fort Scott National Historic Site, ride the trolley, eat a "Car Hop" lunch, go to the Farmer's Market, have your new book signed at Country Cupboard, shop Main Street, spend some time at 100-year-old Gunn Park, take a walk on our historic streets and have a great weekend!

Fort Scott Fun

Tasty Tuesdays continue to be my favorite day of the week. Late yesterday, beautiful strawberries became available at the market. You remember REAL strawberries-the ones that are red all the way through and are NOT as big as a baseball? These were really spectacular so we pulled out the 15 year old balsamic and cracked pepper and ate until we couldn't eat any more!

There are always things going on downtown in Fort Scott in the spring and summer. Last Saturday we celebrated our inclusion on the National Historic Register with a festival day at the Farmer's Market, a bounce house, historic tours and a ribbon cutting! If you missed it, I'm sorry-you can see a couple of the folks who went on a historic tour in the attached photo.

The Fort will have special doings this weekend, also the book signing Saturday at Country Cupboard, then it's Good Ol' Days, then the Stray Kat Kar Show and at the end of the month it's the All Class Reunion-whew!

Anything else going on I should know about?

Too Much Free Time

You may have noticed the new "Bacon Department" in the store recently. We've taken some completely silly items with a bacon point-of-view and grouped them together for some fun. One of the items is a boxed set of two bendable figures-Mr. Bacon VS. Monsieur Tofu. We got such a kick out of it that we sent a set to friends in Tucson. Our friend Bruce obviously has too much free time-he sent the attached photo of Monsieur Tofu enjoying the ocean in Southern California where he was sent (for vacation?).

We know Mr. Bacon will win in the end, but Monsieur Tofu is having the most fun at this point!

Salads and Dressings

Last Thursday evening, Kathleen Lyle, a former Fort Scott resident, visited and talked about easy and delicious salads and salad dressings. It was a great class and attendees received a copy of Kathleen's book "The Food of Love (Easy Recipes for Sensuous Cooks)". Kathleen offered to sign books so everyone took home a treasure.

Saved by Bittman-AGAIN

I love Mark Bittman. Well, at least the way he cooks! Last week he inspired our "Tasty Tuesday" menu with "Spring Green Soup". I bought some fresh arugula from Sweet Rose Farms and added it to some veggie stock I had along with some sauted onions and garlic and it was wonderful! Today's Tasty Tuesday" menu will include Bittmans Asparagus Pesto. So come on by life+style between 4 and 7 pm today to give it a try. We'll also have some other goodies from our shelves for you to try. It's great to have the Farmers Market for a neighbor!
