Trick or Treat on Main Street

The twins are all ready for next Saturday morning when all the good little ghouls and gobblins will gather for Trick or Treat on Main Street! On Saturday, October 30th at 11am the Halloween Parade will begin at the Farmers Market. There will be costume prizes, goodies and a hallo-weenie lunch for the little ones in costume.

Our twins didn't want to be left out of the fun so they donned their masks and got their bags so they could snag some goodies too!

Marinade Class

We had a great time with Dawnita Phillips last night learning about marinades. In fact, we were having so much fun; that we forgot to give the attendees their gifts! If you attended the class, please stop by and pick up your lovely "Balance Kitchen Tool" from Trudeau. It's a $9.95 value-so it's worth the trip!

Thanks to Dawnita for the delicious chicken, pork and beef. AND for the great stories! Who else has already re-told her Mother-in-Law story?

Mexican Food with Chris

We had a great time cooking Mexican food with Chris Maycumber last Thursday night. The food was spicy and delicious and Chris showed us some classic preparations that we can use with his recipes and with our own creations.
Thanks, Chris!

Last Tasty Tuesday

Tomorrow is a very big day here at life+style. While the Farmer's Market continues through October, tomorrow will be our last Tasty Tuesday of the season. October 19th is the Friends of Fort Scott fundraising dinner and October 26th is The Taste of Home-we hope you'll join us for both of these exciting events! We've really enjoyed our Tuesday evening get-togethers; and tomorrow promises to be exceptional! Michael Richardson, chef at Cottey College and cookbook author will be joining us to sign copies of his book and chat about food, entertaining, cooking, etc. We'll have some of his pumpkin swirl loaf to sample and of course some great Spice Merchant coffee to go with it. So join us tomorrow from 4 to 7 pm and celebrate good cooking and good friends with us!

Happy Birthday Lil!

What a blast! Lil and nine of her best friends stopped by Fort Scott today to celebrate her 80th birthday-Fort Scott will never be the same! It was an honor to play host to this wonderful group of women with a serious mission-to have fun! By the time we saw the group, they had already brunched at Lyons and taken the Trolley tour. They had already started shopping Main Street when they stopped to take a coffee break here at life+style. Iced tea and cookies all around while Lil opened more than twenty gifts! She had a total of 80 to open during the day and she had already gone through 30. I think she was saving the last 30 for the Buffalo Grill-look out Jeh and Logan!

Taste of Fort Scott

It was just two short years ago that Jim and I spent a frantic week looking for a new home here in Fort Scott. We didn't find one on that trip and ended up choosing our home on line, but the weather was so beautiful and we were welcomed by everyone, so we knew we had made the right decision to move here. Toward the end of our busy week we attended"A Taste of Fort Scott" and were very impressed with this wonderful event. We spent time chatting with Alan and Jackie Warren that night and of course Martha and Jim Scott made us feel right at home.

We will be attending "Forks and Corks-A Taste of Fort Scott" tomorrow night; but this time as exhibitors. We're looking forward to seeing good friends and offering up our delicious chocolate-chip pecan and snickerdoodle cookies. And I'll bet we'll get an opportunity to try some yummy items from other exhibitors. We do eat well in Southeastern Kansas!

Come join us for this great event-for info go to www.fortscott.com

Holy Cow! (and goat!)

The first meeting of the life+style Cheese Club came to order yesterday afternoon. Three beautiful cheeses, Jim Scott running the show and lots of fun! Thanks to everyone for helping us inauguate this new service. It sounds like we will need two deliveries before the end of the year; so email your suggestions for cheeses. We'll let you know when your next chance to "get cheesy" comes up!

Run, don't Walk...

...to the new breakfast/lunch spot at Lyons Twin Mansions! The south mansion is now open from 6am to 2 pm for breakfast and lunch. Our sneak preview was DELICIOUS! Smoked trout, Big Roosters, French press coffee; Tod has created a fabulous menu-woo-hoo! What a great place for a quiet meal, a business meeting or even a romantic, anniversary breakfast (Jim-did you get the hint?). I'm so happy to have another great locally owned business to send visitors to. Thanks, Lyons family!

Oops!

I didn't realize how the headline on the post below would sound. Tasty Tuesdays will continue through October, but I guess I consider September as fall, so I should have said something more appropriate!
Cindy from Sweet Repeats just brought me a yummy sounding recipe for Zucchini Chocolate Cake that we'll be trying this coming Tuesday, and of course Michael Richardson will be here October 12 to cook and sign his cookbook The Best of Cottey Cooking. We will not be having Tasty Tuesday on October 19 due to the Friends of the Fort event at the Liberty Theatre-we hope you'll join us there and support our National Historic Site!

Last Tasty Tuesday of the Summer

What a great party last night! We made some Roasted Potato and Tomato salad with fresh produce from the Farmer's Market. It was enjoyed by our wonderful group of regulars, some new folks and also special guest Michael Richardson, author of The Best of Cottey Cooking. This was Michael's first experience with Tasty Tuesday and our Farmer's Market. He called this morning to tell me how much he enjoyed his visit, and to set October 12 as the date for his book signing and stint as guest chef for Tasty Tuesday. So mark your calendar to stop by on your way to or from the Farmer's Market for a taste of one of Michael's recipes, and to get your cookbook signed!

Too Hot for Tofu?

I guess our Kansas weather just got too hot for Monsieur Tofu so he took his vacation in the Antarctic! Too bad he's missing our beautiful weather right now and the Gala on Saturday too! Let's hope this photo doesn't look like January in Fort Scott-yikes!

So Much To Blog About...

...So little time!

Last Thursday Martha Scott held a private "Cooking with Herbs" class for a wonderful P.E.O. group from Nevada.

While Martha has taught this class several times before, she makes each class different and special. The menu included chicken salad three ways, herbed pecans and walnuts, her super secret "home made" roll recipe and a wonderful herbed peach dessert. If you haven't been to Martha's blog yet, you owe it to yourself to visit www.linesfromlinderhof.com. You'll find recipes, decorating tips and all manner of information about Fort Scott.
Our regular classes will return at the end of September. If you would like to know which classes will be held and when, go to our website www.fslifeplusstyle.com and sign up for the newsletter. Classes are only announced on the newsletter, and if you see a class you're interested in taking, come to the store right away as all reservations must be pre-paid and we only sell 12 seats.
Just ask the gals in Nevada-they'll tell you how much fun the classes are!

Thursday Field Trip

For our final field trip of the summer, we chose to go to Lee's Summit, MO. One of the reasons we chose Lee's Summit is because before we opened our store, we travelled to several historic down towns to see how they were doing; and Lee's Summit was one of them. On our first trip we visited with Jet at A Thyme For Everything (www.athymeforeverthing.com). Since our last trip, Jet has moved to a larger space and she has greatly enlarged her gourmet food selection. Even though a class was set to start soon, she showed us around and shared with us her considerable experience. She also recommended we go to Ciao Bella (two doors down) for dinner. Great recommendation! Jim had a pizza with blue cheese and I had cioppino-delicious!

Too Hot to Cook!

Tasty Tuesday found us a bit wilted, but we were revived by delicious gazpacho courtesy of Mary Corpstein, Sweet Rose Farm and Tastebud Magazine.
We also enjoyed a simple minted, watermelon salad borrowed from Real Simple Magazine.
Soooo Simple!
Cut up a quarter of a medium watermelon (about 2 pounds) and arrange on a plate. Sprinkle with 1/4 thinly sliced red onion, 1/2 cup torn fresh mint leaves, and 1/4 teaspoon each kosher salt and black pepper.
While enjoying the salad, one of my favorite local cooks, Martha Scott remarked "I'll bet this would be even better with some balsamic vinegar!" We pulled out the good stuff and applied a drop. The results? In Martha's words; "A Home Run!"
We'll be trying this again!

Support the Fort!

One of the reasons I love Fort Scott so much, is that this is a town that knows it's history. Our National Historic Site has been the cornerstone of our existence since 1842. I'm so pleased to be on the board of Friends of Fort Scott NHS (www.friendsofthefort.com) a group formed to help develop and promote the Fort. We worked hard to gather enough votes to be named one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas History, and now we're asking for your votes again. And this time it's not just about honor; it's about cold, hard cash! The national or state park that receives the most votes by August 31 wins $100,000 grant made possible by coca-Cola's Live Positively initiative. VOTE AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT!
To vote, go to www.livepositively.com and click on the "Vote for you park!" button.
Type "Fort Scott" and hit the enter button. You can also use the zip code search button.
Click on the red "Vote" button next to the name of our favorite park-Fort Scott!
In addition, for every vote cast, Coca-Cola will also donate $1 to the National Park Foundation up to a total donation of $200,000.
Thanks!

First Class Left-Overs

Our Tuesday Farmers Market (4 to 7 pm) is becoming quite the event. Yesterday, Chris Maycomber, chef and hardware king, cooked up some delicious treats at the market. Unfortunately, I was busy with our own part of Tasty Tuesday in the store and was unable to come over for a snack. But Chris is a great guy and gave me some left-overs! I'm glad no onc could see me last night hovered over a bowl of delicious flavors while watching NCIS! Yes, I probably won't be able to get the stains out of my top, white of course, but it was worth it! I don't have Chris' recipe, but I can share the recipe I used for tabbouleh, borrowed from Ina Garten.

Tabbouleh
Ingredients
1 cup bulgur wheat
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons)
1/4 cup good extra-virgin olive oil
3 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 cup minced scallions, white and green parts (1bunch)
1 cup chopped fresh mint leaves (1 bunch)
1 cup flat leaf parsley (1 bunch)
1 cucumber, unpeeled, seeded and medium sized
2 cups cherry tomatoes cut in half
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Place the bulgur in a large bowl, pour in the boiling water and add the lemon juice, olive oil and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Stir, then allow to stand at room temperature for about an hour.
Add scallions, mint, parsley, cucumber, tomatoes, 2 teaspoons salt and the pepper; mix well. Season to taste and serve or cover and refrigerate. The flavor will improve if the tabbouleh sits for a few hours.

Busman's Holiday

Thanks to the great work Rosemary is doing for us, we've been taking off one afternoon per week. So we jump in the car and travel around the area to some other historic downtowns to check out how they're doing. Overland Park is an easy choice with their strong culinary vibe. Next came Burlington where they continue to struggle, but have a couple of great shops and some nice loft apartments.
Last week we went to Springfield, MO to look around. In addition to their historic downtown square, there is an area known as C-Street. (www.itsalldowntown.com/cstreet) C (Commercial) Street is in the midst of an upturn, but it's painful to walk down the street and see the empty storefronts. It's easy to understand the comments visitors make when they come to Fort Scott when the shoe is on the other foot!
We commiserated with some other small business owners and enjoyed looking around at D Cloud and Company Restaurant Supply, Bridgefield Galleries, Historic Firehouse #2 (now an event venue) and a great vintage clothing store, Decades.
We enjoyed our visit, but as usual; we came back feeling the same as we always do-downtown Fort Scott rocks!

Cool Food for Hot Days

Here is the recipe we used Tasty Tuesday for a great snack.

White Bean and Roasted Eggplant Hummus

Ingredients
1 (1 1/2 pound) eggplant trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
Olive oil for drizzling, plus 1/3 cup
Kosher salt for seasoning plus 1/2 teaspoon
Freshly ground black pepper for seasoning plus 1/4 teaspoon
1 (15 oz) can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
1/3 cup loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about 1 lemon)
1 clove garlic
1 cucumber cut into 1/4 inch thick slices

Directions
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees and place oven rack in middle of oven.
Place the eggplant on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 to25 minutes until golden brown. Set aside to cool.
In the bowl of a food processor, combine the cooled eggplant, beans, parsely, lemon juice, garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Pulse until the mixture is coarsely chopped. With the machine running. gradually add 1/3 cup of olive oil until the mixture is creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Place the hummus in a dipping bowl and serve with the cucumber slices. Alternatively, spoon the hummus over the cucumber slices and arrange on a serving platter.

Another Tasty Tuesday

There is such a bounty of beautiful produce at the Fort Scott Farmers Market, that it's difficult to decide what to make. In addition to making the Cool Cucumber Soup again (we ran out last week) we made Blackberry Crisp and White Bean and Eggplant Hummus. Delicious! We received a suggestion for next week to make tabouli salad-yum!

Fresh Blackberry Crisp

Ingredients
4 cups fresh blackberries
1/2 cup sugar
juice of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons flour, plus 1/2 cup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 stick butter-must be cold

Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In large bowl combine blackberries, sugar and lemon juice together with 2 tablespoons flour. Pour into deep dish pie plate. In seperate bowl blend remaining 1/2 cup flour, brown sugar and butter. Mix until crumbly. sprinkle over berries. Bake for 30 minutes until bubbly.

*I think next time I make this, I'll add some chopped pecans and quick cooking oats to the "crisp" mixture.

Tasty Tomato Tuesday

We had a great time last night with wonderful food for Tasty Tuesday.

We started out with a beautiful insalata caprese. The "Arkansas Traveler" tomato purchased from Sweet Rose Farm might just be the BEST TOMATO EVER! Along with the mozzarella cheese and basil, I drizzled some of our best unfiltered, extra virgin olive oil and 15-year old balsamic vinegar on these sweet beauties-PERFECT!

Many apologies to the folks who missed out on the cool cucumber soup-I couldn't believe how fast we ran out! I think this recipe will be tried again before summer is over-ere it is so you can try it:

Cool Cucumber Soup

3 Cups plain nonfat yogurt

1 English cucumber (about 1 pound), cut into chunks

1 scallion, white and green parts, coursely chopped (about 1/4 Cup)

3 Tablespoons chopped fresh dill, plus springs for garnish

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 medium tomato, seeded and diced

2 teaspoons olive oil

Directions

In a blender, combine the yogurt, cucumber, scallion and dill. Pulse until pureed. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Ladle into individual bowls. Top each serving with 2 tablespoons tomato, drizzle with 1/2 teaspoon olive oil and garnish with a dill sprig.

Makes 4-1 cup servings

All-Class Reunion

The All-Class Reunion was a blast! What fun to chat with folks from all over the country who went to high School right here in Fort Scott. The twins out front had their best "Fort Scott Tigers" caps and t-shirts on and some of our visitors signed in with their graduation years. Most of our guests were pleased to see Main Street still intact, if a little sparse. We of course invited them all to return to Fort Scott to be part of what we hope is a revitalization of our historic core. We still need a real coffee shop downtown along with a pizza shop, shoe store and more!
We will be open 7 days a week all summer long; and invite you to visit especially Saturday mornings and Tuesday afternoons so you can enjoy the Farmers Market in addition to our great, locally owned retailers downtown!

Tasty Tuesday

You just can't beat Chet Bower's beets! I love beets, but my beloved spouse won't touch them; so I bought a jar of Ponderosa Farms pickled beets last week. They're great! If you'd like to give them a try, come by the store today from 4 pm to 7 pm for Tasty Tuesday. We'll have some of Chet's beets along with some salsa from Ronnie Brown too.

Maybe if we're lucky, Mary will have some of her beautiful carrots!
If you can't get to the Farmer's Market today, you can also come on Saturday morning from 8 am to 12 noon in Skubitz Plaza.

Support Our Farmers Market!

If you haven't been to our Farmers Market here in Fort Scott, you're really missing a treat!

It's a real Farmers Market with real farmers. These folks work hard on their farms in this oppressive heat day after day in order to bring you and me beautiful produce, eggs, baked goods, and more!
It's fun to talk to the Gannon family about their adventures raising goats, pigs, chickens, cows and kids. We've enjoyed their beef, pork, chicken and eggs and anxiously await a trip to the farm for goat cheese.
Ronnie Brown is known as "the pumpkin man" but brings lots of other wonderful things to the market as well.

Mary Corpstein works her magic with plants, handmade rugs and delicious vegetables. You may recognize her from her other gig as a helpful hardware gal at Mayco Ace.
Our Farmers Market is open at Skubitz Plaza on Tuesdays from 4 pm to 7 pm, and on Saturdays from 8 am until noon. Don't forget, when the market is open we're open too, so you can get your Saturday morning coffee for your stroll around the market. On Tuesdays we buy something great from the market and invite you to come to the store for a taste-Tasty Tuesdays!
These hard-working farmers are our friends and neighbors. When we buy locally grown produce from them we are supporting our own southeast Kansas economy (the money stays here!) and not using oil, gas and other resources to bring food in from other states and countries.
I understand that tomatoes and corn are coming very soon!

Good Ol' Days weekend

Good Ol' Days weekend was a blast! Thanks to Rosemary and Paula for helping out in the store and thanks also to all the volunteers who worked so hard to put this wonderful weekend together.

Monsieur Tofu is on the road Again!

It's nice to know that even if Jim and I don't have much of a life outside of the store, that our merchandise gets to travel! This photo shows Monsieur Tofu continuing his world travels with a visit to Mount Fuji.
Too bad he's going to miss the Stray Kat Kustom Kar show this weekend, not to mention the Echoes of the Trail Festival at Fort Scott Community College!

Chef in Training

Who's the cutest chef in Fort Scott? Why it's Cassidy Waide of course! She was a BIG help to Daddy Vince at the Farmer's Market a couple of weeks ago making breakfast smoothies.

All Quiet at the Fort

Things are quiet at the Fort for the moment, but the flapping of a really big helicopter over head tells me that things are going to get exciting soon!
Last year was our first Good Ol' Days experience. We worked at the Tourism booth on Main Street and really enjoyed chatting with local folks and visitors.
It really is a time for Fort Scott to shine. Don's team of hard working kids have mowed all the grass they could find, the Master Gardeners have planted beautiful flowers, building owners have spiffed up their properties too. We look forward to welcoming visitors to our fair city and encouraging them to come back again!

The Calm Before the Storm

North Main is nearly empty, and the anticipation is as intense as the humidity. The parade will start in about two hours and many, many volunteers and city staffers have been busy all week preparing for our annual city fair-Good Ol' Days.
It's been fun watching all the preparations from our front window. Inside, Rosemary and Jim have been baking cookies and bread hoping for lots of hungry visitors this weekend.

Memorial Day Weekend

"The Twins" are all set for Memorial Day weekend, so join them for some fun! Buy a poppy, salute a Veteran, visit Fort Scott National Historic Site, ride the trolley, eat a "Car Hop" lunch, go to the Farmer's Market, have your new book signed at Country Cupboard, shop Main Street, spend some time at 100-year-old Gunn Park, take a walk on our historic streets and have a great weekend!

Fort Scott Fun

Tasty Tuesdays continue to be my favorite day of the week. Late yesterday, beautiful strawberries became available at the market. You remember REAL strawberries-the ones that are red all the way through and are NOT as big as a baseball? These were really spectacular so we pulled out the 15 year old balsamic and cracked pepper and ate until we couldn't eat any more!

There are always things going on downtown in Fort Scott in the spring and summer. Last Saturday we celebrated our inclusion on the National Historic Register with a festival day at the Farmer's Market, a bounce house, historic tours and a ribbon cutting! If you missed it, I'm sorry-you can see a couple of the folks who went on a historic tour in the attached photo.

The Fort will have special doings this weekend, also the book signing Saturday at Country Cupboard, then it's Good Ol' Days, then the Stray Kat Kar Show and at the end of the month it's the All Class Reunion-whew!

Anything else going on I should know about?

Too Much Free Time

You may have noticed the new "Bacon Department" in the store recently. We've taken some completely silly items with a bacon point-of-view and grouped them together for some fun. One of the items is a boxed set of two bendable figures-Mr. Bacon VS. Monsieur Tofu. We got such a kick out of it that we sent a set to friends in Tucson. Our friend Bruce obviously has too much free time-he sent the attached photo of Monsieur Tofu enjoying the ocean in Southern California where he was sent (for vacation?).

We know Mr. Bacon will win in the end, but Monsieur Tofu is having the most fun at this point!

Salads and Dressings

Last Thursday evening, Kathleen Lyle, a former Fort Scott resident, visited and talked about easy and delicious salads and salad dressings. It was a great class and attendees received a copy of Kathleen's book "The Food of Love (Easy Recipes for Sensuous Cooks)". Kathleen offered to sign books so everyone took home a treasure.

Saved by Bittman-AGAIN

I love Mark Bittman. Well, at least the way he cooks! Last week he inspired our "Tasty Tuesday" menu with "Spring Green Soup". I bought some fresh arugula from Sweet Rose Farms and added it to some veggie stock I had along with some sauted onions and garlic and it was wonderful! Today's Tasty Tuesday" menu will include Bittmans Asparagus Pesto. So come on by life+style between 4 and 7 pm today to give it a try. We'll also have some other goodies from our shelves for you to try. It's great to have the Farmers Market for a neighbor!

Friday, April 30, 2010

Yummy!

If you've ever wondered how to make a finicky kid love spinach; here's the secret: bacon, cream cheese, heavy cream and lot's of parmeasan cheese! Thanks Vince for showing us your secret recipe!

Beautiful Fort Scott

What a week it's been!
Jerry Witt brought about 40 people downtown yesterday to look at the buildings available and talk about the possibilities for new businesses. We're very hopefull that some more creative people decide to join us in our adventure. Then, yesterday afternoon the Master Gardners came and planted flowers in our hanging baskets-beautiful! The twins needed to take a break from baseball and so now they're chasing butterflies!

Our Treasure

Our National Historic Site, Fort Scott is truly the jewel in our crown here in Fort Scott. Jim and I have travelled around the country, and very few cities have a historic site as well maintained and historically important as ours. We're always proud to recommend that folks visit the "Old Fort". Well, now is our chance to vote for Fort Scott NHS to be one of the "8 Wonders of Kansas History" and let others know about our jewel. Just go to: www.kansassampler.org/8wonders/ and place your vote. The list started out with 170 locations throughout the state, but it's been narrowed down to 24. We think our Fort belongs on the top 8, don't you?

A Few of My Favorites

Blogs, like bloggers vary in style. Here are a few of my favorites:
First of all; Martha Scott's at www.linesfromlinderhof.com Martha lets you in on how she manages to live a genteel, elegant life on the praire. Gardening, cooking, Oliver and more!
While Kenny Felt doesn't post as often as Martha does, his photos are always wonderful, and his positive energy always comes through at www.kennyfelt.blogspot.com.
If you don't know about the Wednesday food section of the New York Times, go there NOW! (www.nyt.com) I really love holding the paper in my hands and reading every recipe and article, but as that is a little difficult here, I enjoy the recipes, restaurant reviews, and wine tips on line. The best part though is Mark Bittman. He often has a 3 or 4 minute video showing him cooking something. He and some of the other food writers blog regularly at: www.dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com.
Enjoy!

Let's Play Ball!

I LOVE spring! I remember growing up in Michigan, wondering if the cold, cold winter would ever end; and then suddenly the tulips would pop up from the ground and the trees would start leafing out. Just like Kansas, sometimes we were tricked into thinking it was spring, just to be surprised by a snow storm or ice storm. Well, I think it really is spring now. Baseball season has started, my tulips are bright and beautiful and the twins are ready to play!
This past weekend the ice cream was very popular with the reenactors visiting the Fort and the Boy Scouts that camped out at Gunn Park. I've switched my daily caffeine habit from hot to cold, and I pulled the sandles out of the closet. We made it!
Lot's of exciting stuff going on in Fort Scott this weekend; including the City-Wide Garage Sale and the Pioneer Harvest Fiesta Swap Meet. Our Farmer's Market will be returning soon to Skubitz Plaza, and don't forget that this Saturday is National Kids in the Kitchen Day-so round up your kids and make something fun in the kitchen!

Catching up

Yes, I know we opened last November, but with the new year (and lots more merchandise!) we decided it was time we made this official. Thanks to the nice folks at the Chamber of Commerce, especially Jerry Witt, we had a good, old-fashioned ribbon cutting with all the required hoopla! We feel privilaged to be part of this supportive business community. Thanks for your support!

Coffee Time

We're ordering our freshly roasted Spice Merchant coffee this week. I just love to open the box and smell those beautiful beans!
Let me know by Friday, and I'll order you a five pound bag of Espresso Roast, Costa Rican or French Roast for only $40.00 plus tax.
A bigger order just makes sense. If they're going to pack up a box and send it to Fort Scott, we may as well fill the box up completely, don't you think?
With the sun out and the temperatures going up, I'll have to start making iced coffee-yum!

Spring?

To be a merchant in downtown Fort Scott you must be: energetic, creative, optimistic and just a little bit silly. We are so looking forward to spring that this morning we made kites for "the twins" to fly! If you don't know who the twins are, stop by-they had on warm scarves when it was cold and snowy, they held balloons for our grand opening (Thanks to Country Cupboard!), and on an everyday basis they stand outside holding flags to let folks know we're open. Well, we thought they needed to have a little fun, and besides, the calendar says it's almost spring!

Just in this week-BLUE BUNNY ICE CREAM! And just in case it doesn't warm up right away, we also received several new varieties of Pappardelles pasta.

Come on in-the coffee's on!

As the result of many requests, we now have a Wish Book!
So if there's a gadget, gourmet snack or other kitchen toy you've been wishing for, come in and sign up so your loved ones (or even "liked ones") can get you exactly what you want.

Web 2.0?

Here I sit at a WEB2.0 seminar, trying to NOT be 52 years old!
OK, I understand that these 21st century communications modes are important, but the learning curve is killing me!
Thank goodness we were able to hire a very clever high school student (Thanks Tanner!) to set up our web site and send out our newsletters, but we know it won't be long before he graduates. So here we go....
Thanks for your patience while we learn!
